“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go.” - Dr. Seuss

The sun came out today! It's still cold, but I'm just glad the rain cleared out! I was able to get some photos of paintings. One of these days I'll actually get a decent indoor studio setup to photograph everything. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

“You can get help from teachers, but you are going to have to learn a lot by yourself, sitting alone in a room.”- Dr. Seuss

My father-in-law is a big fan of Dr. Seuss, and after going through different quotes by him while I was searching for one for my post today, I can see why. Lots of good quotes, so I'll definitely be posting more from him.

“Dreams are real as long as they last. Can we say more of life?”
- Havelock Ellis

I failed to post this painting while my monitor was dead, so here it is now. It's got just a few days left at auction. I think I'm about to go through a cloud phase again in my paintings; I get a little fascinated with all those soft transitions.

Downtown by the Tracks - 6x6 Oil Painting

Sorry for the slight absence. My monitor decided to give out in the last week so I had to find a replacement. In the mean time I decided to paint some more houses in downtown New Bern by the railroad tracks. I can't imagine living so close to the tracks when those trains run by at five in the morning, but then again I live very close to a day care and some days those kids can give the trains a run for their money on the decibel scale.

Everything else you grow out of, but you never recover from childhood- Beryl Bainbridge

I'm not sure why I torture myself by picking a composition with so much TEXT, but there it is. I think this sort of thing would be much simpler on a smooth board versus a canvas, but I'm just too partial to canvas and I won't try to fight it. I've learned some things from this painting, and that includes the reminder that I should always mix MUCH more of that light green background color than I imagine I'll need. I didn't really get that until a few layers in.

My next one will be similar to this but in an 18x24 size, focusing on the same area of the board but with a slightly different setup. But that one might be awhile. I still have to recover from this one.

Without accepting the fact that everything changes, we cannot find perfect composure. But unfortunately, although it is true, it is difficult for us to accept it. Because we cannot accept the truth of transience, we suffer.- Shinichi Suzuki

Nature is often hidden, sometimes overcome, seldom extinguished.- Francis Bacon, Sr.

I'm operating on low energy levels today, but did manage to finish this one and FINALLY finished the Monopoly painting (it will be listed as soon as the edges dry a bit, in a day or two). Hope everyone's having a good weekend so far.

Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality.

I felt like winging it and mostly going from imagination for this painting.

Life may change, but it may fly not; Hope may vanish, but can die not; Truth be veiled, but still it burneth; Love repulsed, - but it returneth.- Percy Bysshe Shelley

I bought a pack of these 8x10 panels so I could start working a bit larger than just the small 5x7s and such I usually do. The great thing about 8x10s is that they can fit into a standard size picture frame, and I'm trying to be more friendly with the standard sizes so customers won't have to worry as much about custom framing.

We think too small, like the frog at the bottom of the well. He thinks the sky is only as big as the top of the well. If he surfaced, he would have an entirely different view.
- Mao Tse-Tung

This is the first painting I've completed on my new panels. I don't know how it is for other artists, but I know that for me just getting fresh new materials and supplies can be a real motivation in being inspired to paint. I love shiny new things.
