Orange Boat at the Dock - 4x8 Oil Painting

4x8 on canvas panel
SOLD

This was painted with a very limited palette of three colors: Cadmium Orange, French Ultramarine, and Titanium White. There were many moments where I was itching to pick up some red to make the colors in the boat a bit richer but I resisted. It was a fun challenge - I'd be interested to try it again with different colors. The photo reference I used is by Logan Ingalls, from Flickr's Creative Commons.

Dying Light Over Wildflower Fields - 6x6 Oil Paintings

6x6 on canvas panel
SOLD

6x6 on canvas panel
SOLD

These two were painted at the same time so they'd be able to work together as a pair or alone. That last glance of blazing light before sunset is always a wondrous site to behold.

Bluebonnet Field - 4x8 Oil Painting

Bluebonnet Flower Field Texas Hill Country Original Oil Painting by Kerri Settle
4x8 on canvas panel
SOLD

I've finally added another blue paint to my working palette. It's a Michael Harding's brand of oil paint, the name is Phthalo Blue Lake. It's a very intense blue that leans toward the green spectrum and has very strong tinting properties. I used it some in the painting above, mixed with my usual Winsor and Newton French Ultramarine.

I recently discovered that Dick Blick has these useful color swatches for each paint color on their website, in case you're buying online and want to compare differences between brands. I found it very useful when I was trying to decide between blues. Below is the swatch for Michael Harding Phthalo Blue Lake from the Dick Blick website:

Grazing Horse - 6x6 Oil Painting

Horse Grazing in a Blue Ridge Mountain Valley Small Original Oil Painting
6x6 on canvas panel
SOLD

After working on some larger paintings today, I feel completely beat for the day. I don't know how many calories painting burns off but it certainly burns off my brain cells after a long painting session.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Red Barn on the Hill - 4x8 Oil Painting

4x8 on canvas panel
SOLD

I've got no time to post, but this red barn with the teal roof is one of the many that begged to be painted from my trip to the mountains a few weeks ago.

Cloudy Day on Cedar Island - 20x20 Oil Painting

20x20 on stretched canvas
SOLD

If you look in my banner at the top, you'll see a painting that looks similar to this one. The other was painted earlier this year. In this one I wanted to simplify the front by removing all the foreground grasses and try to drive the focus to just one of the many houses that exists in that area.

I hope everyone's doing great!

Return to Cedar Island - 4x8 Oil Painting

4x8 on canvas panel
SOLD

Cedar Island is a fun place to paint; this is a little one of the area, where I was simplifying the scene to focus on one of the houses. Tomorrow I'll post a larger one focused on the same theme.

A Boat's Reflection - 20x20 Oil Painting

20x20 on stretched canvas
SOLD

I can't believe it's been over a month since I've worked on a larger painting. I missed having all that room to work with; it keeps me from getting too bogged down in details. This painting of a boat and its reflection was fun and loose and all the things we artists love about painting.

Tucked in the Blue Ridge Mountains - 4x4 Oil Painting

4x4 on canvas panel

I'm about to step out the door but I wanted to post this painting I listed last night for auction. It's from one of the references I took while on my trip in the mountains last week.

Marsh Canal Sailboat - 6x6 Oil Painting

6x6 on canvas panel
SOLD

I meant to get caught up on all the blogs I missed while on vacation but I'm not sure where the time went today. This is one I was working on before I left and got a chance to finish up today. I'm starting to get into a boat phase and found myself working on a larger boat-themed painting today which I'll hopefully be able to share soon.

While on vacation I stopped by Cheap Joe's art outlet and noticed they had some clean gallery-style frames for some of the odd sizes of panels and canvases that I enjoy working with. The frames are available on their website (the link is to the black frames, but they also carry walnut and natural). They're affordable, and you can find uncommon sizes like 4x4, 4x8, 6x6, 6x12, and 12x24. Check it out if you're an artist looking for framing solutions or are a collector wanting to frame up your collection.
