Bluebonnet Field - 4x8 Oil Painting

Bluebonnet Flower Field Texas Hill Country Original Oil Painting by Kerri Settle
4x8 on canvas panel
SOLD

I've finally added another blue paint to my working palette. It's a Michael Harding's brand of oil paint, the name is Phthalo Blue Lake. It's a very intense blue that leans toward the green spectrum and has very strong tinting properties. I used it some in the painting above, mixed with my usual Winsor and Newton French Ultramarine.

I recently discovered that Dick Blick has these useful color swatches for each paint color on their website, in case you're buying online and want to compare differences between brands. I found it very useful when I was trying to decide between blues. Below is the swatch for Michael Harding Phthalo Blue Lake from the Dick Blick website:

This is a very serene view, lovely and easy to live with. And and love that blue, just a little different from any I have seen.

That's a beautiful color, Kerri. And I think your painting, though small, has a monumental feel to it. Very nice!

Thanks Carol! I'm not sure how other brands are with that shade but I'm really happy with this one.

Thanks so much Kelley! I just need to learn to easily translate my small, looser wildflower paintings to a larger scale.

I agree Lauren! I'm happy to introduce it to my palette.

Thanks so much Shaddy for the kind words!

Liz, I think it's just a slight naming difference between brands. I did learn when I was looking for that mix that phthalo blue is also called winsor blue, which I suspected from the swatches but wasn't quite sure about. In the Winsor and Newton brand that I usually use it would go under Winsor Blue (green shade).
