Along the Beach - 4x8 Oil Painting

I've been working on a 10"x10" painting and have found myself getting really frustrated with the texture of the canvas being too smooth, so I've spent the night looking online for prestretched canvas with a rougher texture. I've placed a small order with frenchcanvas.com for their linen canvases to give that a try, but if anyone can recommend a "toothy" canvas, cotton or linen, that's reasonably priced, please let me know. I'd really love to hear what works for other landscape artists.

Is there a toothier canvas in the catalogues?
I have some old boat canvas which is really thick. Maybe ask at a Marine store.

I can't help! I prefer the smoother surface...but I wanted to say that this is a very nice beach painting.

Kerri, you've been doing some beautiful work on these seascapes. I've been painting my canvases with a thin acrylic ground, and they really become rough as a result. Have you tried this? Prior to the application, the canvas I use is not unusually toothy.

Vern, thanks for the comments. I do add one layer of colored gesso before painting but it doesn't make much of a difference on the line of smaller-sized stretched canvases that I have. The paint's just coming out too transparent looking to me.

It is a different line of canvas than the line I use for my larger works, so if all else fails I'll just use the line I'm more familiar with in the future, but I definitely wanted to gather opinions if anyone has a favorite brand. Even the line I use for my larger paintings could use a little more tooth, I think.
