Cupcakes in a Row - 18x24 Oil Painting

Since I have a sweet tooth that's always "on", I got pretty excited when I saw the current challenge on DSFDF of a bunch of cupcakes in a row. It seemed like the perfect exercise to work on values, which is an area I've been trying to improve on. I thought this photo would look really nice as a HUGE painting, but since I'm working under time limits, 18"x24" was as far as I wanted to go.

Taking a Break - 4x8 Oil Painting

This is my entry for the latest Different Strokes from Different Folks challenge, from a photo of a woman in a row boat taking a little break. I was afraid it would make me tear my hair out but I actually really enjoyed painting it. I find that I use a 4x8 format on many of these challenges; so far that's just the way the references have wanted to work out for me.

This week's challenge from Different Strokes from Different Folks was to take a black and white photo of this farm in Pennsylvania and add our own interpretation of color to it. I really enjoyed this one; I sometimes have a hard time deviating from the colors right in front of me in a reference so it was nice to not have any idea what the actual colors were in the scene.

Tomorrow I'm heading to the mountains!

The Different Strokes From Different Folks challenge was to paint this scene of taxis on Madison Avenue in New York City. I really enjoyed painting the taxis, but not so much the buildings. Still, it was fun to step out of my comfort zone again.

This week's DSFDF challenge was a photo of a beach family. Originally I had intended to include more of the figures in my painting, but since I'm pushing the deadline for an entry I decided to focus on just one. You probably know that I don't approach figures often at all in my paintings, so this was a good challenge for me.
