Breaking Through - 12x12 Oil Painting

12"x12" oil painting on 1 1/2" deep stretched canvas

There's nothing I love better than painting a moody beach scene. This one really captured me - the lonely cloud wandering over, the clearing sky, the saturated light breaking through. It also makes me glad I made the switch to deeper canvases, because it makes a great impression hanging on the wall.

My last rework for now, this time a bigger painting. Before the rework it was very dull and uninspired; it was fun to come back and add color and depth to it.

"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." - Pablo Picasso

I have to say, it's been relaxing and enjoyable to paint these little sunset paintings lately. I like to imagine those perfect ends to perfect days. Life can be so hectic; it's nice to escape into tranquil moments through painting.

"Happiness comes from within a man, from some curious adjustment to life." - Hugh Walpole

I didn't get a chance to post this painting yesterday on my blog, so here it is now. I've painted a few similar scenes to it before; I just really love that warm palette and playing with the tree silhouettes overhanging the lake. I've been running low on these square format 6"x6" canvases for a while so I haven't gotten to paint many lately, but I've just ordered a new batch. The square format has always been a favorite of mine.

"When all else is lost, the future still remains." - Christian Nestell Bovee

A question for my artist friends: I've been using Silver Grand Prix brand Chungking bristle brushes as my work horse lately, but they seem to wear down on me within a week or two of use. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a longer lived but similar brand brush. I hate having to buy new ones every few weeks, but it might just be my abusive painting ways. Let me know if you know of a good alternative!

Everyone else might be sick of these ocean paintings by now, but I'm still a little obsessed with them. It's not that I haven't tried to find other subjects to paint, because I have. But I keep coming back to these.

"You can't have everything... where would you put it?" - Steven Wright

This painting did not like to have its picture taken since it has so many darker spots. It's also a painting that I went back to over and over again, trying to get it the way I wanted it. It's changed a lot from its previous versions.
