Portsmouth Island House - 20x20 Oil Painting

20"x20" oil painting on stretched canvas
SOLD

"Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay."
- Robert Frost

This is one of the abandoned homes on the now-uninhabited island of Portsmouth, near Ocracoke Island. You can read more on the story of Portsmouth here.

6"x8" oil painting on canvas panel
SOLD

"I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order." - John Burroughs

I was in the mood to paint clouds! I liked the look of these, like they were being swept away in a hurry.

Three Graces - Atlantic Beach Houses - 18x24

18"x24" oil painting on stretched canvas
SOLD

"Slow down and everything you are chasing will come around and catch you." - John De Paola

I've gotten a little worn out on the smaller paintings lately and have a few larger pieces going. Sometimes it's just great to feel like you can stretch out on a larger canvas when the little ones start feeling too cramped. These houses sit watch on Atlantic Beach.

Lookout Sound - 8x10 Oil Painting

8"x10" oil painting on archival canvas panel
SOLD

I hope everyone has had a great St. Patty's Day! Thank you to everyone who sent well-wishes for my sick cat; I'm very happy to say that he's back home with me and seems to be doing well. For the first 24 hours back he was stuck to me like glue.

Endless March - 6x6 Oil Painting

6"x6" oil painting on archival canvas panel
SOLD

"There is, incidentally, no way of talking about cats that enables one to come off as a sane person." - Dan Greenberg

I had the unfortunate experience of a sick kitty needing to go to the emergency vet last night for a urinary blockage. I'm still waiting on him to be cleared to come home (probably tomorrow), but I did find painting very useful in relieving some of the anxiousness of the wait. Here he is, from his childhood days, being silly sandwiching himself between the cushions of my ratty old college couch. I can't believe it's been almost 8 years, but I'm hoping for many more!

Evening Walk - 5x7 Oil Painting

5"x7" oil painting on archival canvas panel
SOLD

"When the spent sun throws up its rays on cloud
And goes down burning into the gulf below,
No voice in nature is heard to cry aloud
At what has happened. Birds, at least must know
It is the change to darkness in the sky.
Murmuring something quiet in her breast,
One bird begins to close a faded eye;
Or overtaken too far from his nest,
Hurrying low above the grove, some waif
Swoops just in time to his remembered tree.
At most he thinks or twitters softly, 'Safe!
Now let the night be dark for all of me.
Let the night be too dark for me to see
Into the future. Let what will be, be.'"
- Robert Frost

It took me quite a while to work my way through this painting and it's silvery-gold palette, but I like the way it turned out in the end. I experimented with a little more texture in this one than usual, giving the waves a boost of paint. I hope everyone has had a great weekend.

"I dreamed a thousand new paths. . . I woke and walked my old one." - Chinese proverb
This is one of the sandy paths at Fort Macon Beach. It was quite a beast to photograph.

"I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."
- Isaac Newton

Steadfast - 6x8 Oil Painting

6"x8" oil painting on archival canvas panel
SOLD

"Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality."
- Jules de Gaultier
Today was a beautiful day and the week promises more of this kind of weather. The parks were packed. Even the seagulls, pigeons and ducks behaved themselves today and didn't dive bomb me when I went to feed them bread; no doubt they were already fat and happy from previous handouts.

Promise of Summer - 8x10 Oil Painting

8"x10" oil painting on archival canvas panel

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
- Albert Camus
This is based off a photo reference I took at Cape Lookout, but heavily rearranged to make a more welcoming composition. I find myself really enjoying painting these 8x10s, they're definitely a comfortable size to work with.

SOLD

"Seize the moment of excited curiosity on any subject to solve your doubts; for if you let it pass, the desire may never return, and you may remain in ignorance." - William Wirt
This painting is being an absolute beast to get a decent picture of. This was the best of the bunch that I've taken in the past two days but I'd still like to try again. Some day everything will come together at once!

Low Tide Marsh - 24x24 Oil Painting

24"x24" oil painting on stretched canvas
SOLD
"A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval." - Mark Twain
After a week's hiatus from blogging, I'm back. I've spent the week with my nose in a few art books and haven't spent much time on the internet. While this is in mostly a low-key value scheme, let me know if it looks ridiculously dark to anyone. I saw it on my husband's ancient CRT monitor and it wasn't pretty, but that thing is older than dirt and isn't the most discerning in terms of values or colors. Since I myself recently had to get a new monitor I just wanted to make sure my photo values were coming out about the same as they used to, or if they've suddenly gotten darker in the last few weeks. I've done a calibration on this monitor but you can never be too sure.
